The cleanliness requirements for modular cleanrooms in food and beverage production vary depending on the product type and manufacturing process.
I. The Need for Cleanrooms in Food and Beverage Production
The food and beverage industry demands exceptionally high standards of hygiene and quality control. Any contamination can compromise product quality and even pose risks to consumer health. Modular cleanrooms provide a controlled environment that effectively minimizes these contamination risks. They are widely used in applications such as beverage mixing, food processing, and packaging. For instance, Calypso, a beverage manufacturer, sought a way to produce healthy beverages without sacrificing taste or shelf life. In collaboration with Connect 2 Cleanrooms, they implemented an ISO Class 5 modular cleanroom solution. This example highlights the importance of higher cleanliness levels in ensuring product quality and safety.
II. Cleanliness Standards for Modular Cleanrooms
1. International Standard Classification
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) provides a widely adopted classification system for cleanroom cleanliness, ranging from ISO Class 1 to ISO Class 9. The higher the class number, the lower the cleanliness level. In food and beverage production, cleanliness requirements typically fall between ISO Class 5 and ISO Class 8. For example, Clean Air Products introduced a new series of modular cleanrooms featuring corrosion-resistant 304 stainless steel ceilings and wall panels, designed for wash-down environments. These cleanrooms can support applications requiring cleanliness levels from ISO Class 8 to ISO Class 5 (equivalent to Class 100,000 to Class 100).
ISO standards define cleanroom classes based on the concentration of airborne particles. For ISO Class 5, for instance, the allowable number of particles of 0.5 micrometers or larger is limited to 3,520 per cubic meter of air.
2. Industry-Specific Requirements
Different types of food and beverage products have varying cleanliness needs. The production of aseptic beverages or high-sensitivity food products typically requires a cleanliness level of ISO Class 5 or higher. In contrast, ISO Class 7 or ISO Class 8 is often sufficient for conventional food and beverage products.
In comparison, the biopharmaceutical industry imposes even stricter cleanliness requirements, as product quality and safety are directly linked to patient health. Cleanroom cleanliness levels in this sector often fall below ISO Class 5. While the requirements for food and beverage production are relatively less stringent, they still demand rigorous control, generally maintained within the ISO Class 5 to ISO Class 8 range.
